After speaking somewhere yesterday, a young man met me and complained about low sales. I asked him the industry they are in, and he told me. I asked about their target market, and he didn’t even know what I was talking about.
Eight out of ten business owners believes that everybody is their customer. They believe that they are selling what everybody needs. Nothing could be further from the truth.
If you think everyone is your customer, then no one is your customer. See, your business strategy must be well articulated. It should not be based on guess work. If you cannot categorically tell me whom your customers are, then you dont have any business running a business.
Rolex or Hublot watches are not sold on the streets in Nigeria. In fact, they are not producing for everybody. They know their target market.
You cannot walk into a Toyota dealership and ask for Lamborghini. Likewise, you cannot walk into Lamborghini dealership and complain that Toyota cars are cheaper. They will direct you to any nearby Toyota dealership in town.
Every school must have target market. Every product has its target market. Every hotel, every church, every manufacturing company must know its target market.
Lamborghini should not disturb Africa Three customers to patronize them. Satchet milk manufacturers should not disturb Africa One customers to patronize them.
